Danger Will Robinson

Pirated DVD’s are considered dangerous by modern society. The sheer amount and success of the pirated DVD business, especially in New York, gives it notice. The sometimes-poor camcorder recordings of movies that are so easily accessible in New York City that they come to you in the hands of potential migrants on the city’s subway have inspired precautionary PSAs before most movies in the cinema. The PSAs remind viewers that piracy is stealing and that stealing is against the law. Who’s to say that pirated DVD’s are dangerous? Certainly, these PSAs continue the mysterious “law’s” hold over us, and propagate morality in the name of monetary allocation. Allowing illegal immigrants, new to this country, to make money by traveling between trains is dangerous for those people. Doing anything, legally or illegally, that potentially causes you to be involved with law enforcement is dangerous in this country, especially in this city. But I really would like to have a discussion about what is actually dangerous, especially seeing how that is how I misread the response topic for this assignment. At first, I thought about Jerry Springer when thinking about danger. There was litigation when the ‘reality’ of Springer’s show was called into question. But Springer’s show is only dangerous when you put your 4 year old in front of the TV and allow Uncle Jerry to raise your child. But what about another public figure/shining example for the under-paid, under-educated population with a power switch: “Katt Williams”. This time, in the name of truth and ‘being real’ Katt declares that it’s ok to say the “n” word. The implications of an actor/entertainer looked up to by many people are extremely destructive especially within one’s own community. Certainly someone of Katt’s talent can make money praising those who carry illegal guns at the expense of crime rates within his own community, but is the cheap (no pun intended) laugh necessary to do that job of making people laugh? What actually is dangerous is parents that allow their children to be in the streets at 2 or 3 in the morning. Human’s, for the most part, are all lemmings, especially in New York City. For example, when one person is pushy on the subway everyone else around that person begin pushing. Because of our lemming-like qualities and the number of children riding home at 2am with their parents, this ignorance and disregard for the development of that young person’s brain is a dangerous form of media. The more it’s done, the more it will be copied by other parents.
